Resnet is a hassle. It likes to ignore my favourite antivirus program, AVG, so half the time I need to un-install AVG, install Symantic, and then once I'm registered, I need to un-install Symantec and re-install AVG. Not to mention trying to work my proxy (Which helps keep me spyware free and virus free, as well as keeping annoying ads out of my browsers) around Stony Brook's is a nightmare. The way the system is set up, I feel like monkeys could do a better job. At the begining of every semseter I have every person in my hall knocking on my door asking me to help them with their dang computers because it's impossible for anyone who doesn't know how to work computers well to set up. Yes, their computers might be unsafe for the network, but it's no excuse for the school to make it so these "idiots" can't figure it out on their own. Just because someone is not competent with a computer means that they're an idiot anyway. Most people just don't use computers beyond the basics. Even for people who are skilled with computers Resnet is irritating, since there are MANY issues you can run into and the only way to get any help from the school is to wait hours, days, even weeks, for the understaffed tech department to help.

I agree with the original poster, this semester registering computer(s) became a nightmare. First let me say that if you know what site not to go or which file not to download, you are pretty much virus free. The anti-virus stony brook provide this semester is a total over kill. Its the Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0 (480mb's installed), this program literally slow down you computer(laptop) by 40 percent. Second for unknown reasons connecting to the resnet server this semester was totally random, the network status is "connected" but it would not let connect to any website (even resnet). After calling client support for help, they put me on a list(usually how stony brook works), it have been 3 weeks. and I had to fix it my self by setting the internet protocal properties in windows by filling it DNS servers. Also what I find unfair is that people with mac or linux do not have to pass the any test before registering(for windows you have to pass the CAT Scan https://register.resnet.stonybrook.edu/). how is that fair?? yes yes...all the viruses are in window.....
NOT ALL WINDOW USERS ARE IDIOTS...

@Z: You dumb fuck, like I said, I wanted to update but the proxies on the ResNet did not allow it to update asshole, so STFU before you say something you don't understand.

Stony Brook, home of the Union File System, is a Mac/Windows only campus? That is disappointing.

"My anti-virus program did not want to update in order to meet ResNet’s requirements, then my Windows Defender was outdated but ResNet did not let it update."

"I think it’s unnecessary to update such things as your browser"

You're part of the reason that these steps are neccessary. Your anti-virus is out of date. Your windows updates are out of date. You seem to think that it's unecessary to update your browser despite the fact that new security fixes are released many times a month.

By failing to do the most basic maintenance on your computer, you've turned it into a liability to the network.

In short, these steps are required so that Resnet can protect itself from idiots like you.
